Teguise

Teguise was the former capitol of Lanzarote for five hundred years until the capitol was transferred to Arrecife in the 19th century. Teguise is one of the oldest settlements in Lanzarote and indeed the Canary Islands.

Teguise was the centre of attacks by the Moorish corsairs murdering and taking the inhabitants off to slavery. There was a watchtower constructed near to Gaunapay, from this tower practically the whole island is in view. In the 15th century there was a massacre in which almost all of the population was killed.

In the main square at the side of the church there is a small alley which is named sangre ( blood )due to, on many occasions, blood flowing through the nearby streets.

There are several places to visit in Teguise, Santa Barbara castle, el Palacio de los Spinola, San Rafael Hermitage, San Francisco Convent, Santa Domingo Convent, Senora de Guadalupe Church.

Teguise now is the host to the market on a Sunday and public holidays.
