The Green Caves
The Green Caves are situated nine kilometers from the most northerly tip of Lanzarote on the road from from Arrieta towards Orzola.
The tunnel was formed during eruptions which is estimated to have happened up to
five thousand years ago by a stream of molten lava. The tunnel stretches for
approximately seven and a half kilometers one and a half of this is under the sea.
The Green caves are part of the same underground tube as the Jamos Del agua. The cooling and solidifying of the molten lava is what has
caused the appearance of the Green Caves.
The Green Caves are approximately one
kilometer in length. It is believed that many of the islands inhabitants hid here from the invading pirates
during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Today the caves are now illuminated has safe pathways with some music.
There is a guide to take you on the one hour tour.
Open Monday to Sunday 10.00 - 18.00 hrs. Last entrance 17.00 hrs.
